2023, the year humanity realised the Climate Change and Nature Loss crises are inseparable

Hello Mozaic Guardians, Investors and Friends!

What a year it has been. For the world, for nature, for Mozaic, and for us individually.

A year ago, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Agreement was announced which started (or catalysed) what now seem like an unstoppable wave pushing nature at the forefront of the global climate and economic narrative.

For the lack of a better analogy , here at Mozaic we have spent the last 6 months paddling hard to catch this wave and we’re now in this critical, yet thrilling moment where we managed to stand on the board firmly, eyes looking forward. Next year will be all about solidifying our stance, finding the perfect line, and gaining speed to deliver the impact that is required: profitable nature regeneration.

In the meantime, let’s review what we’ve been up to in the last couple of months!

Highlights (if you're busy stopping Nature loss and can't spare too much time)

‍1. We are finishing the year with a strong customer pipeline for 2024: 3 LOIs signed, >15 expressions of interest & active discussions, and a long list of leads across 4 key areas:

- Corporates & landowners needing to monitor biodiversity to comply with new regulations (e.g. BNG)

- Nature-based Solutions project developers needing to demonstrate impact beyond carbon

- Remote sensing companies looking for low-cost ‘ground-truthing’ data

- NGOs seeking nature-related revenue streams for local communities‍

2. Christian shipped v2 of our Nature Data Commissioning & Observation platform MVP developed in collaboration with our partners at rePLANET, incorporating insights across 6 taxa groups – demo to be released at the World Economic Forum in Davos in Jan!

3. We’ve also made huge stride in building our partnership ecosystem:

- 2 MoUs with world-leaders in the biodiversity project development and bioacoustics sensing spaces, plus a few more that we are working on and excited to announce next year!

- And we are already members of the Biodiversity Credit Alliance and Nature Tech Collective

4. We’ve also onboarded our first team members. Very proud to be working with:

- Richard, our part-time expert ecologist, is a peer-reviewed Phd bringing years of experience in habitat mapping and acoustic interpretation

- William (European Institute of Innovation for Sustainability, ex-WWF) and Johnny (founder @ Totally Money, ex-BBC) are helping shape our go-to-market approach as Senior Advisors

- Last but not least, Syakira is supporting our business development efforts part-time whilst completing her MSc in Climate Change Management & Finance at Imperial College London

5. We wrapped up our Carbon13 experience with a bang at the incredible Cambridge Union where we showcased our vision to over 200 investors, industry experts and friends

6. Finally, we’ve been busy prepping our fundraise with over 30 investor discussions in last 2 months

Fundraising update

1. We will be formally opening our Pre-Seed round in February 2024
2. We will raise £750k to build a world-class team at the intersection of AI, Ecology, and Community

1. Finalise our integrated offering to back corporates’ biodiversity claims in the UK, EU & US supply chains▪ Launch our Commercially Viable Product in Q1 2024

Nature Knowledge Hub: What COP28 meant for Nature & Biodiversity

1. The ‘global stocktake’ connected climate change & biodiversity loss, citing the ‘importance of protecting, conserving, restoring & sustainably using nature ecosystems for effective & sustainable climate action’

2. >150 businesses & financial institutions announced plans to begin assessing, managing and disclosing their nature-related impacts, dependencies, risks, and opportunities through the TNFD & SBTn frameworks

3. But lack of quality data is often cited as the main pain point to assess nature impact: oh hello, Mozaic Earth!

4. $186.6M of new financing for nature & climate towards forests, mangroves, and the ocean announced (above the $2.5B to protect & restore nature announced during COP28’s World Climate Action Summit)
